After much discussion, my older son decided to dress up as Robinson Crusoe the shipwrecked hero of his favourite (audio)book.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUC9W1lJOWjhU9Jmo5YdbF2t8ql6N7crTjxfcIPiOK51Dx5Gsouk06mni68yEt5g2pz-kFZ54Ntj94VamKFs7NO857i0NAwFOtSyZac5iVnQzp1v3Njbf165DB1sQ8zdviUWkVVg2KYek/s1600/IMG_9690.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUC9W1lJOWjhU9Jmo5YdbF2t8ql6N7crTjxfcIPiOK51Dx5Gsouk06mni68yEt5g2pz-kFZ54Ntj94VamKFs7NO857i0NAwFOtSyZac5iVnQzp1v3Njbf165DB1sQ8zdviUWkVVg2KYek/s320/IMG_9690.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used some outgrown school clothes to make his costume.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First I found one of his old school shirts from last year that was on the grubby side anyway... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglCvnSqZNPj8R1r4bgSXKHJFv04_4k56HoQoajlmsvxV4lkKhJ23Hfr5REHnTPZdtVrOhXLKY1o3UGEGQUbjbiB6bOknuh8QPZA2BgRepqbvomZ2pZchpi-Dgsf79szB6p0RjE1AxzD_g/s1600/IMG_9666.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglCvnSqZNPj8R1r4bgSXKHJFv04_4k56HoQoajlmsvxV4lkKhJ23Hfr5REHnTPZdtVrOhXLKY1o3UGEGQUbjbiB6bOknuh8QPZA2BgRepqbvomZ2pZchpi-Dgsf79szB6p0RjE1AxzD_g/s320/IMG_9666.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I threw three black teabags into about 1.5-2 liters of boiling water. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBtnLy7e27j847kgYF3ME6WYzwTrdKUgfwHuUATfCQqrZS-GPX2MtyN68L_8YOkYtId3DMkebJyKN3QrDAY-Xh9_6zmgDk_vrgu7NrQGixbzARi0qLUJmG-Qvh68ru3_f_d4IGheXrbQY/s1600/IMG_9676.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBtnLy7e27j847kgYF3ME6WYzwTrdKUgfwHuUATfCQqrZS-GPX2MtyN68L_8YOkYtId3DMkebJyKN3QrDAY-Xh9_6zmgDk_vrgu7NrQGixbzARi0qLUJmG-Qvh68ru3_f_d4IGheXrbQY/s320/IMG_9676.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I put shirt into the tea-dye and let the pot boil for a couple of minutes before turning the heat off and leaving the shirt to soak for an hour or so.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSzVGLuWx5YTvpl8hnh5Zbaa0BAB2egfC5g3re6a0oPXGIsAKmFpXFZcHJRGXftP-M2wYFB1hM36WTt_jgW8a9b1w2M5Ko_DvKlz4ag5KPBreFkBkAhqTVAjwvVBY7FPJdzA2Wr32Ctos/s1600/IMG_9677.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSzVGLuWx5YTvpl8hnh5Zbaa0BAB2egfC5g3re6a0oPXGIsAKmFpXFZcHJRGXftP-M2wYFB1hM36WTt_jgW8a9b1w2M5Ko_DvKlz4ag5KPBreFkBkAhqTVAjwvVBY7FPJdzA2Wr32Ctos/s320/IMG_9677.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I then rinsed the shirt in cold water and hung it out to dry.<br />
<br />
When it dried, I ripped off parts of the sleeves, and tore into the pocket. (As it is still cold out I was concerned A would freeze with too many tears...)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMulMj4PwK6yaEb2QaucobfY5X99pw1kp9t1hiP4RukformBWQv4eYM0EB3GJrlZKo3n4VyJWhFIyCSFtKcS0cnhCHS3bVk32ULlV5Zsq1fvKniCGbJHt-Xyt167QMLAsKDlXzGA8c7ko/s1600/IMG_9700.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMulMj4PwK6yaEb2QaucobfY5X99pw1kp9t1hiP4RukformBWQv4eYM0EB3GJrlZKo3n4VyJWhFIyCSFtKcS0cnhCHS3bVk32ULlV5Zsq1fvKniCGbJHt-Xyt167QMLAsKDlXzGA8c7ko/s320/IMG_9700.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbDz3LxW94VkMjHWYTUaDmJqnDZc06hGTl9LIiu2aNFuMd3kKff9yKkazr3IUxVZo4w1tgat_blHTqBWbq6y30PfuqjdPEagVhymlLenawGNaBHpoKfEFyVlzcx_jLMMqARK8r-V6IO6g/s1600/IMG_9697.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbDz3LxW94VkMjHWYTUaDmJqnDZc06hGTl9LIiu2aNFuMd3kKff9yKkazr3IUxVZo4w1tgat_blHTqBWbq6y30PfuqjdPEagVhymlLenawGNaBHpoKfEFyVlzcx_jLMMqARK8r-V6IO6g/s320/IMG_9697.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The shirt turned out really well, much better than I had hoped for.</div>
<br />
<br />
For the bottom part of the costume I used a pair of scruffy P.E trousers that were already riddled with holes for some reason.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyz3UTGYu7ks9cDBEogauXV8ECxxQhXzjqopg3XYTwen9LrBSJubfGuQ_yXOlJvZOEyLlhQEu72ro3Dptb6fjLb319PghClfVaqCQzONH-jr6BLHMvNOcY5lhdWgRzv7rSxhcSUJyBrSw/s1600/IMG_9708.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyz3UTGYu7ks9cDBEogauXV8ECxxQhXzjqopg3XYTwen9LrBSJubfGuQ_yXOlJvZOEyLlhQEu72ro3Dptb6fjLb319PghClfVaqCQzONH-jr6BLHMvNOcY5lhdWgRzv7rSxhcSUJyBrSw/s320/IMG_9708.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I cut the cuffs off the legs in a zigzag fashion. And cut a few holes into it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO_V8EgStRusaqgFbq1pfb6IEJMTY_gsapqtriU4ReldkvRzm9Bt-bavzq0JxUEj1E5duYi2yUfENUCTAVGr5k1SP1LByu6sxutLYPByaoaXmlXQZUNEcWHH7QPTA-NJU_AnImwbmiKDo/s1600/IMG_9696a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjO_V8EgStRusaqgFbq1pfb6IEJMTY_gsapqtriU4ReldkvRzm9Bt-bavzq0JxUEj1E5duYi2yUfENUCTAVGr5k1SP1LByu6sxutLYPByaoaXmlXQZUNEcWHH7QPTA-NJU_AnImwbmiKDo/s320/IMG_9696a.jpg" width="262" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
A added an old scarf as a belt onto which he strung the pouch he uses for Cubs and tucked in a wooden knife S lent him. Alternatively it's quite easy to make a weapon from sticks and rope.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieGlJLEwteR9lX-cF5gaGcKUfpQPWvvna2MV9bW-KSHMlweB8FX3tsEfqLfCWsrAhsG9fbL0Ixf0ZMTxS48Dbacdr3wpecs6_kzLbSkdDUN5niXtpA-v-5qtLb3ROEn1GvmpSnZ9LSfuU/s1600/IMG_9699.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieGlJLEwteR9lX-cF5gaGcKUfpQPWvvna2MV9bW-KSHMlweB8FX3tsEfqLfCWsrAhsG9fbL0Ixf0ZMTxS48Dbacdr3wpecs6_kzLbSkdDUN5niXtpA-v-5qtLb3ROEn1GvmpSnZ9LSfuU/s320/IMG_9699.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What I really like about this costume is that I could recycle old clothes that we no longer have a use for, my only added cost was 3 teabags, and the fact that the costume is comfortable to wear, its not made of that clingy polyester material like most of the cheaper costumes you can buy in shops.</div>

<br />
My younger son does not really love dressing up. So when it was Hero Day at school , I was a bit worried about how he would take to the idea. He did not want to be Spiderman or Batman, a brave knight or any other of the costumes we had at home.<br />
We were discussing the options on our way home from school. When we got home my older son noticed a blue hoodie on the banister. "Well...actually this would make a great Captain America costume... would you like that S?" he said. And he would, so I got down to making the costume.<br />
I used white felt for the A on the hood and the star. I attached the felt with Bondaweb and subsequently sewed it on. (I cut the star out in one and cut it in half and lined it up on either side of the zip.) <br />
<br />
The shield was made out of a cereal box. I used a plate as a template , and cut two circle shapes.<br />
I also cut a longer rectangular shape for the handle that I covered in duct tape, to make the handle stronger.<br />
I cut two slots into one of the circles and pushed the handle through both holes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I painted and varnished the Captain America sign on the other circle and glue-gunned the two sides of the shield together. I wanted to make sure the shield does not fall apart at school, and result was a shield that the kids have played with a lot in last few months and is still intact.</div>

This Monday, by older son's school had an inset day, and we wanted to do something special at home. So I thought we could try making pizza... again.<br />
I have to say, I do not have the best track record with pizza dough. We've had some bad ones since I started trying to make them. The kids and my husband have been very supportive and optimistic, and it seems to have paid off, as this latest attempt actually turned out alright!<br />
<br />

This is the recipe I used for the dough (from the BBC Goodfood website)<br />
<br />
<br />
300g flour ( I just used plain this time )<br />
1 teaspoon instant yeast<br />
1tsp salt<br />
1tablespoon olive oil<br />
<br />
Mix, knead for 5 minutes. Cover and let raise.<br />
<br />
Pizza Sauce (ala Judit Stahl and recommended by Adrienn :))<br />
Half the amount is enough for the two pizzas we made, but I'd rather have some extra pizza sauce at home than half a carton of passata)<br />
<br />
400g passata (one pack)<br />
2-3 garlic cloves<br />
two pinches of oregano/basil<br />
2 tbs olive oil<br />
1 tbs tomato puree (sometimes I omit this)<br />
pinch of sugar<br />
salt, pepper<br />
<br />
Just mix until they come together as a smooth sauce. Waited about half an hour for the dough to raise a little bit<br />
<br />
I preheated the oven to 220 degrees Celsius and alsp preheated to bake trays(, as I have had problems with the dough being undercooked in the past...)<br />
We made two bases, being careful not to make them too thin, (approximately 1 cm) (another issue I have had...)<br />
Put bases into the oven for about 2 minutes.<br />
Took them out of the oven, smeared them with sauce grated cheese, sausages and fresh basil.<br />
<br />
Note: I had some left over pizza sauce (about half). It lasts for a week or so in the fridge and it is a great sauce for quesadias or grill cheese sandwiches. In fact, I sometimes make quick and easy mini pizzas from English Muffins with this sauce!<br />

We had spent a lot of time by the seaside this spring. We went down to Brighton for a day out with my husband, then with my parents and kids. We did some crabbing at Whitstable with my uncle, then down to Hastings for two lovely days with friends. Needless to say, we collected lots of rocks. They were lovely and smooth and we couldn't resist. </div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
I think I started baking our own bread nearly a year ago. Since then, I have made several changes to the original recipe. I have moved away from the lovely white loaf towards healthier options, and also recieved great advice from my mom (the right ratio of white-whole wheat and rye), mother-in-law (less water) and of course the queen of domestic advice, my grandmother ( more yeast, less salt, add oil, add yoghurt, knead for longer).</div>
<br />
<br />
So here is my new and improved recipe for making one large or two small loaves:<br />
<br />
<br />
about 1 tablespoon dried yeast<br />
1 teaspoon of sugar<br />
little flour<br />
3 tablespoons of water<br />
<br />
1. <b>Mix</b> the ingredients above and allow yeast to rise.<br />
<br />
2. <b>Add</b>:<br />
3 cups strong white bread flour<br />
0.5 cup whole-wheat bread flour<br />
0.5 cup rye flour<br />
3 teaspoons of salt<br />
1-2 tablespoons of oil<br />
linseeds, sunflower seeds, pumkin seeds, chia seeds to taste<br />
2-3 tablespoons of joghurt (optional)<br />
potatoes (mashed if you have any at hand- also optional)<br />
1.5 cups water (maybe less, so add bits at a time)<br />
<br />
<br />
3. <b>Knead</b>. The consistency should be thick and a difficult to knead. You should knead (with a hand mixer) it until the dough separates from the side of the mixing bowl and is sort of "pillow-y" (my word for it- obviously). It takes a couple of minutes and involves some vertical movement of the kneading sticks. If you add too much water it will be gooey, so it is best to add about a cup of water first and add some bit by bit without it getting gooey.<br />
<br />
4.<b> Cover and wait</b> for dough to rise.<br />
5. Form dough into the <b>shape</b> you want.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe7jgPeFvwjrktmDapIG3TaSNDZLsv-6M5bV4TDdzLrjW5MVtxrswJGSG2Vd-lk_r6-wDXWppl9D0Xje6jaz0n5709r48xbjQqCNPgSOAP8HouS_U0Yded9BOZTLRABGc-VAkl9C6I4pw/s1600/IMG_8127.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhe7jgPeFvwjrktmDapIG3TaSNDZLsv-6M5bV4TDdzLrjW5MVtxrswJGSG2Vd-lk_r6-wDXWppl9D0Xje6jaz0n5709r48xbjQqCNPgSOAP8HouS_U0Yded9BOZTLRABGc-VAkl9C6I4pw/s1600/IMG_8127.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
6. Bake at 200 degrees Celsius until golden brown. (30-45 min, depending on size of bread and your oven).<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After a busy morning of Christmas shopping with the little one, we took a coffee/babychino break at Costa. This is when I had my first Gingerbread Latte. I got thinking that it would be fun to make for the family on Christmas morning, so I looked up a recipe online. I found one onn www.sweethappylife.com</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I really liked that it could be made from ingredients I already had at home, and took only about 30 minutes to make - but the syrup will last to up to 2 months in the fridge,<br />
<br />
The recipe I used was as follows<br />
<br />
2 cups of water<br />
1.5 cups sugar<br />
2 teaspoons of ginger<br />
1 teaspoon of cinnamon<br />
2-3 teaspoons of vanilla sugar.<br />
<br />
Combine all ingredients and stir continually or whisk until it boils, then on a lower heat, allow to simmer while stirring until it thickens.<br />
<br />
Allow it to cool down and put in fridge in an air-tight container.<br />
<br />
<br />
You need to add 1-2 teaspoons of the syrup to warm milk, add your coffee and top off with whipped cream- or not. <br />
I also made the kiddos gingerbread milk, which was really popular!<br />

I found Annabelle Nielsen's blog with some great label ideas for preserves (http://zeit-geister.blogspot.co.uk/2011/12/making-ghost-jam-and-other-yummy-stuff.html) and saw these<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCkdnsKj_WA3EDz3OXJeP9nRqASaqRLH6govXOzGaoBf3BPSov6l-Vy9HUwb40DFgOnRoyfkPL-AP3vnt9Y2pKGsh58LtU8NfMgLbeomBBgxS_gHhcH5fNCrSQKqhp76yiZljT0QVG1u8/s1600/IMG_7614.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCkdnsKj_WA3EDz3OXJeP9nRqASaqRLH6govXOzGaoBf3BPSov6l-Vy9HUwb40DFgOnRoyfkPL-AP3vnt9Y2pKGsh58LtU8NfMgLbeomBBgxS_gHhcH5fNCrSQKqhp76yiZljT0QVG1u8/s1600/IMG_7614.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I drew a border and wrote the words with a fine felt tip pen. I also added a bit of holy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKeAgFhNC7Nspjlls1ebhzAlNkQMvUSVv97CWfPasfRrlXMR54wm1dfOvjqnsWLx-dgEbAKkODkcawqXPa3gNKbVxhisSe_ZxOafAiUiJ1FS85mv38MhYuFzvopkOdgIDntTZJeQVGa8U/s1600/IMG_7616.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKeAgFhNC7Nspjlls1ebhzAlNkQMvUSVv97CWfPasfRrlXMR54wm1dfOvjqnsWLx-dgEbAKkODkcawqXPa3gNKbVxhisSe_ZxOafAiUiJ1FS85mv38MhYuFzvopkOdgIDntTZJeQVGa8U/s1600/IMG_7616.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then I colored the label with Sharpies.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgosj1poCMLhga6V59qOaEVYJdkAwnIpIbirS-7csSIzh5NbVJA7pY7SMqwgMvzQR4VCSjzGPQ1kXLPWd1uO7RY7HssUUVOP1vv6Y-Wc5Z2LE4VcT6EkPGxVISM_SvzPxBaVMugpmI7Nf4/s1600/IMG_7618.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgosj1poCMLhga6V59qOaEVYJdkAwnIpIbirS-7csSIzh5NbVJA7pY7SMqwgMvzQR4VCSjzGPQ1kXLPWd1uO7RY7HssUUVOP1vv6Y-Wc5Z2LE4VcT6EkPGxVISM_SvzPxBaVMugpmI7Nf4/s1600/IMG_7618.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After cutting out the labels I glued them on to the jars.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrCP1E8CtnKlEtDseMJW9IggEWwGLuJpErbwvaGBzE-hnpIiJGMJ_-vbeLIQf5BBc4XH9rcuNnzy0qENDsRhM3XsSS1O9AXo9d-TFLmq7v29KFCUjJ9tOvNu80rRNHIfm2dLFFAbNjkeY/s1600/IMG_7622.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrCP1E8CtnKlEtDseMJW9IggEWwGLuJpErbwvaGBzE-hnpIiJGMJ_-vbeLIQf5BBc4XH9rcuNnzy0qENDsRhM3XsSS1O9AXo9d-TFLmq7v29KFCUjJ9tOvNu80rRNHIfm2dLFFAbNjkeY/s1600/IMG_7622.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I cut out round shapes from a gingham fabric (old school uniform) and covered the top of the jars.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The labels kind of remind me of Alice Tait's book cover designs. </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7jGlrubxkM9gyOuwbr9niFgoyDWJgElhx-p62jYYLgoPkO6G6p6R58ImOREIVo_pypBC6YrbFwjFtXRPsiQn0tuojSCsbOxIxnycufZSzIae09gus8jXVaNUhYHcP8BoA0sQ73ANNmY0/s1600/IMG_5254.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7jGlrubxkM9gyOuwbr9niFgoyDWJgElhx-p62jYYLgoPkO6G6p6R58ImOREIVo_pypBC6YrbFwjFtXRPsiQn0tuojSCsbOxIxnycufZSzIae09gus8jXVaNUhYHcP8BoA0sQ73ANNmY0/s1600/IMG_5254.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I bought this five drawer Ikea Moppe unit at a charity shop. As you can see below, it probably belonged to a fellow craft-enthusiast... let's just say, I hope my revamp will stand the test of time better than this...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi43pNtWO8bC5sj1gGCts3GbtdeqKetuzOE7odygEDsp3QnQBBQrTE70azcpfbf2gxgkiW3mFgdigorlkl0D-3pu6s99EEjhAMx_4vdmVRUiBI_aOp4X8CYpGbSBJ84YuhqGJ_CbvQpd2s/s1600/IMG_5110.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi43pNtWO8bC5sj1gGCts3GbtdeqKetuzOE7odygEDsp3QnQBBQrTE70azcpfbf2gxgkiW3mFgdigorlkl0D-3pu6s99EEjhAMx_4vdmVRUiBI_aOp4X8CYpGbSBJ84YuhqGJ_CbvQpd2s/s1600/IMG_5110.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="text-align: center;">I had purchased the drawers about six months ago but could not decide on how to revamp it or what to use it for. Then my elder son showed me a plan he had jotted down about the topics he wanted to blog about (scouting, archeology, drawing ect) He drew boxes around each of the topics, in a way compartmentalizing them. It occurred to me that he could make good use of the moppe drawers- especially as his desk is usually a bit cluttered. </span><br />
<span style="text-align: center;">I did not want it to be too cute, as he is nearly 9 years old.After some deliberation, I decided on Victorian specimen drawers, remembering how people in the Victorian era enjoyed collecting bugs, fossils, curiosities and discovering the world around them.</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcG5g3fW7D5-onb7P8wZDTUmyJiUNtDieV2OjSzVxChDxiUGRByent7pRJCazWOQI_XH66C2Ohoqm7ucfyyXrt-tPP0q8YrCXBxS6PLLy2QoB0OLt4LlxPBlqtMq_EWdF3Q0zcfcGlDCw/s1600/IMG_5256.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcG5g3fW7D5-onb7P8wZDTUmyJiUNtDieV2OjSzVxChDxiUGRByent7pRJCazWOQI_XH66C2Ohoqm7ucfyyXrt-tPP0q8YrCXBxS6PLLy2QoB0OLt4LlxPBlqtMq_EWdF3Q0zcfcGlDCw/s1600/IMG_5256.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
I used by Black'n' Decker mouse to sand the wood and some blue acrylic paint.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib_on-9YWLRlwyFTp3ddwkh_ovkHdq5j3U_0YY9vNMyIlag3JSCxpSOPbmOnR0HnIRxniQskyOPLPSlwbk5x_tkuCft2ShboMtzeXgDWGtcNMlbVb_4o083SZ5KnfBJamiTIB1QvYGptU/s1600/IMG_5114.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib_on-9YWLRlwyFTp3ddwkh_ovkHdq5j3U_0YY9vNMyIlag3JSCxpSOPbmOnR0HnIRxniQskyOPLPSlwbk5x_tkuCft2ShboMtzeXgDWGtcNMlbVb_4o083SZ5KnfBJamiTIB1QvYGptU/s1600/IMG_5114.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Because the Moppe drawers are a bit tight to begin with, I sanded all sides of some of the individual boxes so they would side better. I only painted the front of the drawers for the same reason.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDYJhe9yF7owSdcyv7Ie5YIae67cnSFTRUgcQ0Ufx3qgGR8DOzOAah_vAIWiZ7wUgaPQINfioC6sFq_ziTUA_8lFBsQADzCG8dc3mpvpInO_JtQ_AysTHI1bsrQ1WiSFCwMl4-KLLbjos/s1600/IMG_5115.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDYJhe9yF7owSdcyv7Ie5YIae67cnSFTRUgcQ0Ufx3qgGR8DOzOAah_vAIWiZ7wUgaPQINfioC6sFq_ziTUA_8lFBsQADzCG8dc3mpvpInO_JtQ_AysTHI1bsrQ1WiSFCwMl4-KLLbjos/s1600/IMG_5115.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
I traced the front of the box onto<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
graph paper and drew the shape of the faux identification label.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO6EsUI5Hl-34jtuigr2x9pdmVzEaovX-c14QUfFPxppObrc2VUjEwnedHIgVj9ioqQ8JcXnLp7nso-kkyfv4_ZokVJp1mkD9xJkjBxMka19cmUDO9jBUjgv2n_jzRMOeg2dkBzAM_chg/s1600/IMG_5116.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO6EsUI5Hl-34jtuigr2x9pdmVzEaovX-c14QUfFPxppObrc2VUjEwnedHIgVj9ioqQ8JcXnLp7nso-kkyfv4_ZokVJp1mkD9xJkjBxMka19cmUDO9jBUjgv2n_jzRMOeg2dkBzAM_chg/s1600/IMG_5116.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
I cut out the identification label while keeping the drawer shape I traced intact.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4bkW2MscB7SLIgY3Zm3_QWlKrtB1o_c8wuqBD73vOBvxA2t612APcn6drTLIfJPa4Hh6QjrKHTSg6e5sDMpoKF_mSZOW8c7bxyB7Zm_0jvJtzue4bLma3DIGUsbaiXPeHlXnF0vOCkrE/s1600/IMG_5118.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4bkW2MscB7SLIgY3Zm3_QWlKrtB1o_c8wuqBD73vOBvxA2t612APcn6drTLIfJPa4Hh6QjrKHTSg6e5sDMpoKF_mSZOW8c7bxyB7Zm_0jvJtzue4bLma3DIGUsbaiXPeHlXnF0vOCkrE/s1600/IMG_5118.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
I used this as a stencil on the wooden drawers. I think using a customized stencil made positioning the label in just the right place easier.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbAiCmaGv7qiI3x9swTEjS0OEEL_Ol5KpiOou1SPP-HWnIddcmE2ZhJjaNbUv6XtSk_v_l5C3cAHO8ZbyJ_BewfEmwuPNMBsQm1b8wvyI2RNe3VX359trVIeCk2U14rJwnlBjQVuROf6w/s1600/IMG_5120.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbAiCmaGv7qiI3x9swTEjS0OEEL_Ol5KpiOou1SPP-HWnIddcmE2ZhJjaNbUv6XtSk_v_l5C3cAHO8ZbyJ_BewfEmwuPNMBsQm1b8wvyI2RNe3VX359trVIeCk2U14rJwnlBjQVuROf6w/s1600/IMG_5120.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQlmQh43AohH1JBKRfcDtyk01Z4ogDSID4_EYtoZTyXW-QprQtxsHjTGCQZqqTs6tGOZirJ9hkMZvvQfamx0KXDj8CbFYhOC8yNb9sqPvBUGkRP5NTCB1i5WOTB8DDhRLYNyuaUr48ZiQ/s1600/IMG_5121.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQlmQh43AohH1JBKRfcDtyk01Z4ogDSID4_EYtoZTyXW-QprQtxsHjTGCQZqqTs6tGOZirJ9hkMZvvQfamx0KXDj8CbFYhOC8yNb9sqPvBUGkRP5NTCB1i5WOTB8DDhRLYNyuaUr48ZiQ/s1600/IMG_5121.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
Then I cut out the rectangle from the middle of the identification label and traced around it at the center of the label.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh47a4drKhO460KLod3OyO_hRD52Mgxh2H1pWXmE1Upprw0_nEEfCJFFYmZ9ryqxK5Woj0RRwQnEXN0BIuiTh_lTJf6130yFt-yHzqKSKTx4S9IG-c7rZ2Htivy_m4PWCfUbihFQXEtXPY/s1600/IMG_5123.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh47a4drKhO460KLod3OyO_hRD52Mgxh2H1pWXmE1Upprw0_nEEfCJFFYmZ9ryqxK5Woj0RRwQnEXN0BIuiTh_lTJf6130yFt-yHzqKSKTx4S9IG-c7rZ2Htivy_m4PWCfUbihFQXEtXPY/s1600/IMG_5123.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
This would be the white (faux paper) bit of the label.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLuxvn8n2P2PEyGax4vF04aUeo1_P7KmCYFK05wUd4TySP_ky2KCRv-ow_FcSxop8FdDTD4_uSK9Cfb_wvHTJDNVVQNXbCp_iCN-zprDgZhkE3CIuLhBE-Be5pHJB5WTPYzjzLkDUo8RE/s1600/IMG_5124.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLuxvn8n2P2PEyGax4vF04aUeo1_P7KmCYFK05wUd4TySP_ky2KCRv-ow_FcSxop8FdDTD4_uSK9Cfb_wvHTJDNVVQNXbCp_iCN-zprDgZhkE3CIuLhBE-Be5pHJB5WTPYzjzLkDUo8RE/s1600/IMG_5124.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I first painted the white bit with acrylic paint.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz0rvBKA3BpmbxfIsCsxZbNnx3tBfvMrAGIcqoANNn60qofnQIbBaiYnlCPmeAcOiGaA2CdqBnINszGJ1iqhiT7HRHnj1ZLiwHFYGVkuqipliWZ5BnGgo6JF5wdNe-5IYxO39RVblaX5s/s1600/IMG_5125.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz0rvBKA3BpmbxfIsCsxZbNnx3tBfvMrAGIcqoANNn60qofnQIbBaiYnlCPmeAcOiGaA2CdqBnINszGJ1iqhiT7HRHnj1ZLiwHFYGVkuqipliWZ5BnGgo6JF5wdNe-5IYxO39RVblaX5s/s1600/IMG_5125.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
I then used bronze acrylic paint for the card frame.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOerJifIfhhK1Xx1eRqri0zkESuzjQbBe3l05uReF5Y5GxW5GPsMxprTN4Uxi5fXGPAcSd6sPDjRWUkLLI7ILiMt2-AEvWIH7eZWYKiPh2Gfdy9ENO0m9_IW7p5bGFh7HmTgl603t-M8E/s1600/IMG_5127.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOerJifIfhhK1Xx1eRqri0zkESuzjQbBe3l05uReF5Y5GxW5GPsMxprTN4Uxi5fXGPAcSd6sPDjRWUkLLI7ILiMt2-AEvWIH7eZWYKiPh2Gfdy9ENO0m9_IW7p5bGFh7HmTgl603t-M8E/s1600/IMG_5127.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Once dried, I also painted faux screws onto the frame, and painted words on the labels.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I used a matt finish to protect the paint.<br />

I upcycled this Ikea Malma mirror for my younger son. He had been sick with the chicken pox for a few days, and we used the time we had today to work on a project together.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Because this is a more elaborate design I made a blueprint. I traced the frame:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxOzEn3YVmyP2yhya_QRB5XU3x38DItwd_8HxpFx6tGd8cf8g01I0oGwezZCP9xyDbM_eoXHn_6NiMPoS_wuhf2u8fe37WhdFu33Qc8WaON3uEcSg8pmj_mB6Hj4dq7HSATsnHIoU-yrg/s1600/IMG_5220.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxOzEn3YVmyP2yhya_QRB5XU3x38DItwd_8HxpFx6tGd8cf8g01I0oGwezZCP9xyDbM_eoXHn_6NiMPoS_wuhf2u8fe37WhdFu33Qc8WaON3uEcSg8pmj_mB6Hj4dq7HSATsnHIoU-yrg/s1600/IMG_5220.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
And I traced around the mirror bit as well, so I knew exactly how much space I had to work with,<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIl7VT7EVwgAR-V2CPGp7S9V5M1Ryon9-dNYrUYaOctEA8HAUqrY1YD_o2v7-XysSAVCmrT5SW7YSOZad0xwuNIjPfCjyiKLIWil99QuyyVqarFx3EePHX_0oWhqgcbV5n8SHZK5GW9Jg/s1600/IMG_5221.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIl7VT7EVwgAR-V2CPGp7S9V5M1Ryon9-dNYrUYaOctEA8HAUqrY1YD_o2v7-XysSAVCmrT5SW7YSOZad0xwuNIjPfCjyiKLIWil99QuyyVqarFx3EePHX_0oWhqgcbV5n8SHZK5GW9Jg/s1600/IMG_5221.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
While I made the sketch of what I wanted S used some sand paper to sand the surface of the frame. This was both to give him a job and to help the paint stick better.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
I made cordial and elderflower infused lemonade from the blossoms. This is the recipe for the lemonade.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhenEZGqFCArZIWlYd5pFMOxb9mchnbbupIQ9pc_2Yp2UCnYgG5i78RVVD7u0G6orElqCKNITn-onflCesIRijG79po0y1VoA0keMyz00zdIt695U1dGTYm9zjffSwJZ6ykR5xBS2kH_qw/s1600/IMG_4528.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhenEZGqFCArZIWlYd5pFMOxb9mchnbbupIQ9pc_2Yp2UCnYgG5i78RVVD7u0G6orElqCKNITn-onflCesIRijG79po0y1VoA0keMyz00zdIt695U1dGTYm9zjffSwJZ6ykR5xBS2kH_qw/s1600/IMG_4528.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
I used about 10 blossoms and 3 litres of water.<br />
<br />
1. Make lemonade the way you like it. I prefer to use honey or brown sugar<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTFc6eAPk5d_8P9UmIkuSHN3pf09OdhQ_twEcOGZCNC1ku5eOjpQjs4vOz9AA2D3Zds1B7XhkB4AHboQftAFFHcYTjs-TJWOAXtT5tRhBMmtZNV6_WBgEFSyBnnnaKDcIVqfK76mA90R4/s1600/IMG_4540.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTFc6eAPk5d_8P9UmIkuSHN3pf09OdhQ_twEcOGZCNC1ku5eOjpQjs4vOz9AA2D3Zds1B7XhkB4AHboQftAFFHcYTjs-TJWOAXtT5tRhBMmtZNV6_WBgEFSyBnnnaKDcIVqfK76mA90R4/s1600/IMG_4540.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
2. 3. Wash and slice a lemon and add it to the lemonade too. (optional)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL2eUNTTEEE2bhMnl4CbEsABlnwkZrtonHCBIzei29qruMRwLojs701purBvZUggrNNwYgtchgJbXDZn6SabLC0tbZ8txbKCmjMWzQFEsIe5t52ctIqCF6cAA6ovj1hwTV-z1-c9Bfw-E/s1600/IMG_4541.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgL2eUNTTEEE2bhMnl4CbEsABlnwkZrtonHCBIzei29qruMRwLojs701purBvZUggrNNwYgtchgJbXDZn6SabLC0tbZ8txbKCmjMWzQFEsIe5t52ctIqCF6cAA6ovj1hwTV-z1-c9Bfw-E/s1600/IMG_4541.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
3. Wash and clean blossoms (i.e. make sure that there are no creepy-crawlies or dried bits). Add it to the lemonade.<br />

4. cover and leave in the fridge overnight.<br />

The zest from the sliced lemons gives the drink a tangy taste. I discarded them after the first night, because I felt it might be a bit too tangy for the kids.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We got this chair from our friends when we moved, and I have been meaning to do something with the seat (other than covering it with a tea towel) for nearly a year now... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It was a question of finding the confidence and the right fabric, mostly the latter :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoiOQtN8CJiExsloQv9ajuMxmKv2Abs8OBHVPRPzWK4CteZ55ZXmf6B0YO-MxT5Q93tztw0MA-Obi4hBXPmPUCLniD9h9Y65HPUwvEE6Vpg7rtt3FSshN7gNUAacEbcTwJf49k8YaETDQ/s1600/IMG_4740.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoiOQtN8CJiExsloQv9ajuMxmKv2Abs8OBHVPRPzWK4CteZ55ZXmf6B0YO-MxT5Q93tztw0MA-Obi4hBXPmPUCLniD9h9Y65HPUwvEE6Vpg7rtt3FSshN7gNUAacEbcTwJf49k8YaETDQ/s1600/IMG_4740.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjflE0LxS0ciJRHSSgD0R_2zRbcUbIeuVfYC6jQn_gE_RoraeJG3Zkb61EJGnKCzqaJJGMcCbPQkmejwLZlX8GMC4wiI35-nubeEAq_BT3u9GMGqmuYaz8p_IMWpi0T6Zt1QDGTUtcQUDQ/s1600/IMG_4733.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; display: inline !important; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjflE0LxS0ciJRHSSgD0R_2zRbcUbIeuVfYC6jQn_gE_RoraeJG3Zkb61EJGnKCzqaJJGMcCbPQkmejwLZlX8GMC4wiI35-nubeEAq_BT3u9GMGqmuYaz8p_IMWpi0T6Zt1QDGTUtcQUDQ/s1600/IMG_4733.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Last week I found a whole bunch of floral print pieces, scraps and shop samples in a charity shop. I bought a couple of pieces, this sample among them:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMIXwPdIbERG5hnc8Smqo00pyI2Xu32_p98Yf0c0oDlU1vZmEo_hiU9o6cR_IEr1p9yUy8F8vbPHMf8Q-KwDvmiQhuVszqLYMSwuAt8l9egyDUI6FhxhLmiuMuQrGBJzDFACiymEnZDMQ/s1600/IMG_4744.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMIXwPdIbERG5hnc8Smqo00pyI2Xu32_p98Yf0c0oDlU1vZmEo_hiU9o6cR_IEr1p9yUy8F8vbPHMf8Q-KwDvmiQhuVszqLYMSwuAt8l9egyDUI6FhxhLmiuMuQrGBJzDFACiymEnZDMQ/s1600/IMG_4744.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(<span style="text-align: center;">it is about 60 x 60 cms) </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The great thing about this chair is that the seat can be unscrewed and that when you reassemble it, the screws fix the seat firmly on the frame so that the upholstery fabric is held in place.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My son and I dissembled the seat quite quickly and easily. He loves using the screwdriver, and also loves to "really help". </div>

Luckily the edges of the fabric were cut with pinking shears so as to prevent fraying. I fit the fabric onto the seat while making sure the screw holes were not covered.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCVeKQHirLwI8U7iswHa0A-BwcquT8soZ8-2b2Tfjpjz-EHMct6vNyyCDMRHY6S1BLrxM1LWqK0rH_C7oiV0bV9nGcRprf5NeBfEPj9OMU-jQH0FDJXmnyDhw4Q6DuzZSEZvKsifrN-l8/s1600/IMG_4750.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCVeKQHirLwI8U7iswHa0A-BwcquT8soZ8-2b2Tfjpjz-EHMct6vNyyCDMRHY6S1BLrxM1LWqK0rH_C7oiV0bV9nGcRprf5NeBfEPj9OMU-jQH0FDJXmnyDhw4Q6DuzZSEZvKsifrN-l8/s1600/IMG_4750.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
I used tape to secure the fabric in the back, making sure the fabric on the seat was nice and even. Ideally one should use a staple gun or even a glue gun. I'll see how well this holds and glue gun it if necessary.<br />

I am really proud :)The Feverish Feltisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02859447773320606334noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6281441992121748386.post-51804915428794643242014-06-03T00:01:00.001+02:002014-06-03T00:01:16.408+02:00Scouting project: learning about leavesOne of my sons is a cub scout, and one week their homework was to collect leaves and try to figure out what they were. So we collected leaves from the garden and on our way home from school.<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK2cjnVCFVC5dAgCUwOSKWla_90ru4am7Hslu4nrJziL_t8QAHomJSLX4Q4KfnHI5dZ3LFeyJJGR0UfGBatuACLuUV1onOMfp-1j32qLJDoAt_ZCWUfg1d2GRMzQemRyP-DWA_Djandxk/s1600/IMG_3678.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiK2cjnVCFVC5dAgCUwOSKWla_90ru4am7Hslu4nrJziL_t8QAHomJSLX4Q4KfnHI5dZ3LFeyJJGR0UfGBatuACLuUV1onOMfp-1j32qLJDoAt_ZCWUfg1d2GRMzQemRyP-DWA_Djandxk/s1600/IMG_3678.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We had to look up most of the names and I was concerned that he would forget so much new info. To avoid this, we used clear adhesive film to laminate the leaves and we added little notes with the names of the plants. This way he also practised his spelling and learned the names better than if I just told him which each one was.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Abel's cub leader was very pleased and he was still able to to do the leaf rubbing activity. The idea came from a bookmark my grandfather bought me from Israel with pressed flowers on it. </div>

I made these pictures based on (basically copies of) Rob Hudgson's wonderful designs. My elder son had tonsillitis, so we had a lot of time to do arts and crafts after the antibiotics kicked in!<br />
<br />
I had planned to paint these since before Easter and I was so glad to finally get round to it. I used 20 cm x 20 cm canvases and acrylic paints.The Feverish Feltisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02859447773320606334noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6281441992121748386.post-46383931672662131532014-05-19T16:44:00.003+02:002014-05-19T16:44:53.423+02:00Little boxes of London paintingOur guest bedroom had bare walls, and I wanted to paint something that is related to London, as our house guests spend lots of time sight seeing there.<br />

I discovered Rob Hudgson's work on pinterest which I thought was really cool and relatively easy for me to paint. Later I discovered he did some pictures based on cities, London being one of them. So I got to work.<br />

I enjoyed painting this, and my boys liked to watch these familiar things appear on the canvas with smiling faces! More to come...</div>

After mastering bread baking, the next challenge was was to learn ho to make brioche. I had the advantage of my grandmother staying with us for a couple of weeks and watched her bake it several times. I baked a very pale brioche for Easter all by myself... and after some consultation realizing what went wrong, I made another attempt today, using a ceramic loaf dish.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1. Mix a heaped teaspoon of dry active yeast with a teaspoon of sugar and a bit of lukewarm water/milk. Allow it to come "alive", which means the liquid starts to get bubbly. Sort of like the picture above.</div>

2. Melt 60g of butter a couple of teaspoons of sugar in a mug of milk and a teaspoon of salt <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
3. Add 500g of plain flour and the milky-buttery mix to the yeast.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

4. mix with a spoon. It should be thick but still mixable with a spoon (you can add more flour or milk if needed)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

5. Kneed with a mixer for several minutes until the dough seperates from the bowl and looks sort of like the picture above.<br />
6. Allow the dough to rise in a warm place, eg. near a radiator. Or heat the oven to 50 degrees celsius and turn it off before putting the bowl in. the dough should rise to 2x its size.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

7. Braid...I planned to braid the dough, but it became clear early on that it wasn't going to happen... Instead I used an oily spoon to spoon the dough into the mold lined with baking paper. This makes the texture lighter.<br />
<br />

I made the dough the day before and bought some candy to decorate with.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcNnSZKj3Vre0uKkjGD4jTSGExB02Wb7vTHAWm4YDc0la_60oUEM1_tlhxPkeaQOytgYzryNuEhRoWItJO47wb9qlsgkBR04PEjczdVViEpGI7-YhE1X-J5RhBNV4OtRRzEwG_gBASyEI/s1600/baking1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcNnSZKj3Vre0uKkjGD4jTSGExB02Wb7vTHAWm4YDc0la_60oUEM1_tlhxPkeaQOytgYzryNuEhRoWItJO47wb9qlsgkBR04PEjczdVViEpGI7-YhE1X-J5RhBNV4OtRRzEwG_gBASyEI/s1600/baking1.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
The kids used the rolling pin to roll the dough, and cut out some simple shapes<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgft1kPG7umz1JIgF9gLFykNrdAW_cndZxzNBYMtGicLjDvZr3GVW9DrGAgwrqDzR2Tf6rWk8UNRTo6sQARrYv9f6w9uOzAqx7kS2oJ8JNJ-KYGGj_vaGmJhwLpEEOPSvK55ADPKiEog6w/s1600/IMG_2848.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgft1kPG7umz1JIgF9gLFykNrdAW_cndZxzNBYMtGicLjDvZr3GVW9DrGAgwrqDzR2Tf6rWk8UNRTo6sQARrYv9f6w9uOzAqx7kS2oJ8JNJ-KYGGj_vaGmJhwLpEEOPSvK55ADPKiEog6w/s1600/IMG_2848.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
We used icing and candy for the decorations. I bought some of the candy at a candy stand so there would be a variety to choose from. Most of them turned out to be way too big, but the older ones and I cut them into smaller bits with a knife. We also used strawberry laces which we cut with scissors. A good activity for the little one :)<br />

<br />
I must confess, I just took down the heart shaped wreath I made for Christmas (http://thefeverishfeltist.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/felt-christmas-decorations.html) yesterday. Arguably, given its shape there was no reason to take it down before Valentine's Day, but it was really time for a change... Not a big one though...<br />
I removed the Christmas embellishments and added more spring-appropriate decorations. I used a baby girl dress I bought at a charity shop and a bit of pink felt.<br />
<br />
The dress had a bow on it, which I kept. The thread came undone as I cut it off so I had to stitch it to keep it intact, but It was still much nicer than anything I could have made by myself:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiahVhNBRGn2UmbjAUcSilvSs4n8zUI6f45XVU5HSFReIYeJ6LJVzVJM7PRo5HLc9GM2enBpR1toyfiXbh3WBDpDGu0SfJ-vI29Pvr9KePov7cizUXexJwlvW9C_UzvRpCvplRURjl2tKE/s1600/IMG_3054.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiahVhNBRGn2UmbjAUcSilvSs4n8zUI6f45XVU5HSFReIYeJ6LJVzVJM7PRo5HLc9GM2enBpR1toyfiXbh3WBDpDGu0SfJ-vI29Pvr9KePov7cizUXexJwlvW9C_UzvRpCvplRURjl2tKE/s1600/IMG_3054.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I sewed the bird from felt and added buttons for eyes<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNsYTaXEuMSRnbGyin1SvoyyTg-64Ci_oU0wLHwys2comy0ImoMIvtvpFxKVzXuqEPZF4IB80OtfczQ0-qjNrz7E7L-6QLh4dSNc_NW-OHUuCfw_Asrhfn2NsMGs3T4MQ9-fFfkuyPx2I/s1600/IMG_3093.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNsYTaXEuMSRnbGyin1SvoyyTg-64Ci_oU0wLHwys2comy0ImoMIvtvpFxKVzXuqEPZF4IB80OtfczQ0-qjNrz7E7L-6QLh4dSNc_NW-OHUuCfw_Asrhfn2NsMGs3T4MQ9-fFfkuyPx2I/s1600/IMG_3093.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I removed the hem and used it to hang the bird.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2zYsd3ek0JbhGof-SB5wBFPiYmT3QeER65huIyDAgMiKq3LZdZ7RKrlvlJmQvExD4OUS3pIkKMx3EpydLT5CFSQ29PZ3iCTpRloYeEED-Q2rP6SuWVlcVDEYPq08j7gmMjQR-z-IJNFY/s1600/IMG_3055.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2zYsd3ek0JbhGof-SB5wBFPiYmT3QeER65huIyDAgMiKq3LZdZ7RKrlvlJmQvExD4OUS3pIkKMx3EpydLT5CFSQ29PZ3iCTpRloYeEED-Q2rP6SuWVlcVDEYPq08j7gmMjQR-z-IJNFY/s1600/IMG_3055.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I also removed the belt bit from the front of the dress and used it as the ribbon behind the bow.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwh3meWlD0X9TWrRM_hcGOu2tp98-sMu1PF9ni8V-7dwcwP25qXz_cw2kgXmZUScgZtGi1Afot7XuIG1MXPJlWh2HcoCwJTkAa-6XOejkSAsNgS7d6Wodo-11dW3PwyhIH_j4nPtDtvxo/s1600/IMG_3108.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwh3meWlD0X9TWrRM_hcGOu2tp98-sMu1PF9ni8V-7dwcwP25qXz_cw2kgXmZUScgZtGi1Afot7XuIG1MXPJlWh2HcoCwJTkAa-6XOejkSAsNgS7d6Wodo-11dW3PwyhIH_j4nPtDtvxo/s1600/IMG_3108.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I still need to remove the stitches that held the beak in place...</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
It has a bit of a crafty feel because I did not hem anything, just tried to keep as much of the original hemming, but it just adds to the charm, or at least that is what I'm hoping is true :)<br />
<br />

He naturally wanted to represent Hungary. We do not own any traditional clothes, but I found a Primark fedora type straw hat which I embellished with Hungarian tricolor ribbon (sent by mail by my grandma) and waistcoat at a charity shop. My son wore some black trousers and his school shirt underneath. We also got some cocade (kokárda) from our friends. I pinned one on the hat and one on the waistcoat. <br />

In preparation for International Day, A also made a poster. We brainstormed ideas about what he wants on the poster and than found pictures online to print.</div>

He was very excited about making the poster and it was a great way for him to practice his English writing and show his own culture to his teachers and friends.<br />
<br />
Interestingly there was a bit of confusion about the Biro pens at school. A girl claimed that they came from her country. I googled it, and found that Laszló Biró presented his first ball-point pen invention in Hungary at the Budapest International Fair in 1931, patented it in 1938. Later, he moved out of the country due to anti-Jewish laws first to France later to Argentina where he modified it and set up a company that manufactured it. He also invented a lot of other things, many of them in Argentina.<br />

I came down with something at the end of the week, and thought I would try ginger tea (shredded ginger root in hot water) but a friend suggested that the boiling water would kill most of the active agents in ginger, so why not combine it with orange juice and honey instead. So I did and it tasted fantastic- and made me feel better too. Soon I was well enough to make some for the boys. I must say it it is a much more child friendly option than the usual garlic soaked in fruit brandy that I usually opt for when feeling the flu coming on... :)<br />

You can also add honey and fresh lemon juice. Of course, you can also use freshly squeezed oranges, but being able to do that you are probably not that sick. Right?<br />

The whole family loved it! My husband said he felt like Robinson Crusoe eating bread for the first time after many years. We even got the kolbász and paranyica out to make a real breakfast feast out of it- Hungarian style. (or at least our Hungarian style as paranyica is Slovak...) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have to note that my oven-proof dish was not deep enough and the bread lifted the lid off, but it still turned out fine.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The only tricky thing is the TIMING. This is the reason I had been putting it off for so long. You need to plan for the dough to rise by a time you have 50 minutes at your disposal to bake it. This probably mean you need to knead it early in the morning and bake it in the evening or knead it in the evening and bake it when you wake up. </div>

<br />
As I wrote it an earlier post, our walls are still a bit bare in our new home... it has taken quite a long time (and consulting with our landlord), but I have finally put some pictures up (courtesy of my father :).<br />
I bought this frame at a charity shop. I was drawn to the sturdiness and width of the frame. I thought I could paint something on the frame itself as I did with the malma mirrors (http://thefeverishfeltist.blogspot.co.uk/search?q=malma), but I ended up painting it blue (I have lots of blue left over from the desk project http://thefeverishfeltist.blogspot.co.uk/search?q=desk). I have also used the same paint on some furniture here which I haven't posted yet... and let's just say the rest of the family does not share my enthusiasm about the color anymore...<br />

Then I found a great illustration on pinterest and painted something similar<br />
